What is Solid Surface? Solid surface is manufactured by mixing acrylic or polyester resin with powdered bauxite filler and pigments. The material chemically cures and is heated to 60°C or more. Cured material is then cut in sheets or shapes and sanded on one or both sides depending on the brand used. Sometimes the material is brought to 160°C and cooled, to improve its heat resistance.

Recommended Care:  Soap and water on a damp cloth are usually all you need to clean a solid surface countertop, but non-abrasive cleaners may be used as well.  If you need to remove minor scratches, stains, or burn marks, you can use a mild abrasive cleaner such as Comet® or Soft Scrub®.  Solid surface countertops require no sealer. Do not place hot pots or pans directly on the countertop surface.  Use a trivet or another type of hot mat protector.  Keep a cutting board handy, as cutting on the surface can damage it.  When pouring boiling water through a colander, run cold water in the sink at the same time.

Pros to Solid Surface Countertops:The greatest advantage of a solid surface countertop is its ability for scratches to be easily scrubbed out by hand and for cigarette burns to be easily sanded out.  Solid Surface Countertops are durable and resist impact better than other countertops.Solid Surface countertop’s  are non-porous and do not require annual sealing. Large surfaces require seams regardless of the material used. With solid surface, the seams are either invisible or remarkably hard to detect. This is not only good for aesthetics, but it also eliminates a place for crumbs, dirt, stains, and bacterial and other pathogens to get into.Solid Surface's homogenous quality allows you to easily wipe down stains; this enables easy cleaning and low maintenance. Soap, water and mild abrasive household cleansers are used for cleaning.  Solid surface countertops come in a wide range of designs and patterns that will suit your preference and may even mimic stone, or granite looks. It can be fabricated and shaped to fit any space.

Cons to Solid Surface Countertops:  High-heat applications can damage solid surface countertops. Heat may discolor, scorch and may even crack the surface upon contact. Cutting directly on to the surface can also damage the surface. It is therefore recommended that you use hot pads, trivets and cutting boards. Solid surface countertops are not immune to liquids containing harsh chemicals such as nail polish or paint removers, thinner lacquers or oven cleaners. If exposed to their chemical components, surfaces of countertops can be damaged.

Installation:After your cabinets are installed (or support structure), the countertop area will be templated. The fabrication process will take 1-2 weeks from the time the area is templated. When the fabrication process is complete, your Solid Surface countertops will be installed by professional installers.

A solid surface countertop can be a beautiful and durable choice for your kitchen.  Solid surface is a non-porous low-maintenance countertop surface. Available in a versatile palette from solid color to granular, stone-like appearances.  Solid surface countertops are made from a solid acrylic or plastic material with the color going uniformly all the way through the material.  Solid surface countertops can be designed with much greater flexibility than with other countertop materials.  Most layouts can be easily fabricated with virtually invisible seams.  Sinks of the same material can be seamlessly integrated into the countertop without overhangs, rims, or rough edges.
